Advanced Maker Workshop (Ages 13+): Tinkering with Bookbinding

In this workshop, participants will learn basic bookbinding techniques, including pamphlet stitch, side stitch, and accordion fold. A Science World Tinkerer will lead you through the steps and teach you about materials, tools, and bookbinding tips. You will learn the skills you need to start exploring and tinkering with this craft that emphasizes the  A  in  STEAM  (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Design, & Mathematics)!

For ages 13+
This workshop is not recommended for children under the age of 13.

What is "tinkering"?

Tinkering is mindful messing about with tools and materials, with the goal of finding out their possibilities and limitations. When we tinker, we learn about scientific topics, make new things from existing parts, solve problems, and learn by making mistakes.

Materials will NOT be provided for this workshop. Please bring the following materials to the virtual session:

• At least 30 sheets of plain 8.5 x 11 (Letter) sized paper, printer paper is appropriate
• Sewing needle or bookbinding needle
• Thick thread or string   it must fit through the needle you are using. Linen thread, cord, thin yarn, or embroidery thread are appropriate
• Scissors
• Ruler
• Pencil
• Push pin or awl (thin, pointed tool used to make holes in paper)
• Optional   5 of sheets of decorative paper to make covers
• Optional   cutting board and utility knife

This workshop takes place online using Zoom. Meeting details will be emailed upon registration. We will send link to you prior to the workshop.

• You are encouraged to have your camera and microphone on during the workshop to engage fully. You may be asked to mute your microphone during some parts of the workshop.
• Refunds will NOT be given for absences. Refunds will NOT be given if a registrant cancels in the week prior to the program.
